Do you have problems with migration-assistant?
I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 in my brother’s computer, but the installer crashes everytime. So when I looked carefully the logs I realized the problem was the migration-assitant. Since the last version(I think!), to reduce the instalation steps, ubiquity doesn’t have anymore a gui option to disable the migration-assistant.
If you have problems with migration-assistant like me and you don’t wish download the alternate version, just run the follow command on a Live CD terminal:
sudo ubiquity –no-migration-assistant
Don’t forget send the bug report about it.

While probably unrelated to your problem, I’ve had problems with the migration assistant from when it was first introduced, it only copies over about half my files. It’ll copy every directory and name but only include about half the files that were in that folder on the Windows partition.
My solution: Don’t use the migration assistant just mount the drive and copy the files manually.

I think the best use of migration-assistant is to just copy users accounts and try to reinstall the need it applications from the original installation.
Just remember or write down the original settings and then re-enter them manually.
